BUILDING SUPPLIES ASSISTANT DEPARTMENT MANAGER

Position Description:

The Building Supplies Assistant Department Manager is responsible for assisting the Building supplies Manager in the smooth operation of our Building Supplies Department.  This position includes estimating and design work for customers, inventory maintenance and ordering, coordinating staff based on daily customer needs, assisting customers with product purchases, invoicing customers and other necessary requirements of the department.

Responsibilities:

  • Supervise and instruct clerks on projects
  • Check incoming merchandise against invoices
  • Bring real or anticipated operating problems promptly to the attention of management
  • Develop plans and specifications for consumer and commercial customers or contractors
  • Understand and be able to explain building code requirements to customers
  • Prepare list of materials based on blueprints
  • Try to accommodate the contractors prescribed consumer budget
  • Estimate the material requirement for projects
  • Move heavy and bulky merchandise for customers and for sales personnel.
  • Maintain departmental inventory at desired levels for maximum turnover and profitability.
  • Display merchandise sold in assigned department(s) in a timely manner.
  • Place orders for merchandise in assigned department(s), following procedures that conform to store policy.
  • Receive and price merchandise in your area(s) of responsibility.
  • Ensure that correct freight handling equipment is used to load and unload trucks.
  • Unload incoming trucks as required.
  • Ensure that all safety precautions are taken when loading and unloading trucks.
  • Prevent loss and damage to merchandise in the receiving area.
  • Restock merchandise displays.
  • Create promotions to build traffic.
  • Monitor and / or conduct training and development of personnel in assigned department(s).
  • Facilitate communications between employees and management.
  • Prepare sales-floor and salespeople for anticipated increases in sales and customer traffic as a result of advertising and promotional activities.
  • Resolve customer claims and / or complaints in a way consistent with a company policy.
  • Will process special orders for non-stock items.
  • Shop major competitors.
  • Will place orders for seasonal merchandise.
  • Do odd jobs and run errands.
  • Perform light vehicle maintenance (check oil, etc.)
  • Maintain vehicle maintenance records.
  • Check delivery documents.
  • Report company vehicle maintenance needs to supervisor.
  • Follow company procedures regarding required signatures, forms, receipts, etc.
  • Report complaints from customers to management.
  • Assist in loading and unloading merchandise and materials.
  • Follow all safety precautions when operating company vehicles and loading or unloading freight.
  • Be alert for sales opportunities.
  • Make suggestions for rule, policy, or procedure changes when you believe such changes will improve sales, profits, and/or morale. etc.
  • Follow all delivery and receiving procedures and company policies as determined by management.
  • Follow proper documentation procedures for any merchandise that is to be returned or refused.
  • Maintain proper security over merchandise and delivery documents.
  • Attend meetings, training sessions, etc. as required.
  • Work on additional duties and assignments as assigned by management.
  • Work in a safe manner in accordance to provincial and federal safety legislation, as well as use of good common sense.  Report any potential hazards and unsafe behavior to management in order to have the situation corrected.

 

Skills Required:

  • Must be able to communicate effectively with customers, management, other employees in person or by telephone.
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule including weekends, evenings and holidays.
  • Must be able to visually verify contents of shipments.
  • Must safely operate loading, unloading, and transfer equipment (forklifts, pushcarts, computer, etc.), as well as company vehicles. Must safely secure cargo.
  • Must move merchandise weighing up to 100 pounds to or from company vehicles in the delivery process.
  • Must maintain a good driving record and lawfully operate all company vehicles used to make deliveries.
  • Ability to work co-operatively in a team atmosphere.
  • Ability to use technology (I.e. quoting software, scheduling software, supplier ordering and inventory softwares)

 

Education/Experience:

Minimum High School graduation or equivalent.

 

Language:

English – Advanced level written and spoken required

French – French written and spoken skills will be considered an asset

 

Salary/Benefits:

Wage: $17.00 – $18.50 / Hour

Hardware Clerk (Full-Time)

Position Description:

The Hardware Clerk is responsible for delivering products and/or supplies to customers, vendors, jobsites, or other corporate locations, assisting customers with product pick-up and other customer needs.  Duties include operating freight handling equipment, maintenance and operation of company vehicles, verification of administrative paperwork, and working with the public at large.  The Hardware Clerk must safely perform all assigned tasks with sufficient speed and accuracy to avoid adverse impact on the level of customer service.
